Coleen Rooney launched an incredible social media attack on fellow footballer’s wife Rebekah Vardy on Wednesday, revealing how she set up an elaborate sting on Instagram to ‘catch’ her leaking fake stories.
Her dramatic revelation has enthralled Britain and sparked an angry denial from pregnant Vardy this afternoon who said ‘I don’t need the money’ and pointed out other people have had access to her Instagram account.
Fans have also praised Rooney – calling her ‘Wagatha Christie’ – for the sensational way in which she revealed Vardy 37, was the alleged culprit by concluding her post with a thriller-worthy ‘It’s……… Rebekah Vardy’s account.’
The saga began when Coleen, 33, took to social media on Wednesday to reveal she had suspected someone close to her had been betraying her for years and she had conclusive proof that her friend Rebekah was the guilty party.
Vardy is a queen of self-promotion who has risen to the top rank of footballers wives from humble beginnings – the daughter of a BBC local radio DJ and a window cleaner father who has two ex husbands.
Before meeting current husband Jamie, she was working in a Sheffield nightclub and dating a Vauxhall conference football player who has previously accused her of ditching him to ‘trade up’ to Premier League star.
Coleen admitted that stories about her basement flooding, returning to TV and gender selection were only viewed by Rebekah and these were subsequently followed by media outlets, including MailOnline.
The Sun has since removed their story about Coleen’s basement flooding after discovering she had made it up.
Coleen wrote: ‘For a few years now someone who I trusted to follow me on my personal Instagram account has been consistently informing The Sun newspaper of my private posts and stories.
‘There has been so much information given to them about me, my friends and my family – all without my permission or knowledge.
‘After a long time of trying to figure out who it could be, for various reasons, I had a suspicion. To try and prove this, I came up with an idea, I blocked everyone from viewing Instagram except ONE account. ‘
She continued: ‘(Those on my private account must have been wondering why I haven’t had stories on there for a while).
‘Over the past five months I have posted a series of false stories to see if they made their way into the Sun newspaper.
‘And you know what, they did! The story about gender selection in Mexico, the story about returning to TV and then the latest story about the basement flood in my new house.
‘It’s been tough keeping it to myself and not making any comment at all, especially when the stories have been leaked, however I had to. Now I know for certain which account/individual it’s come from.
‘I have saved and screenshotted all the original stories which clearly show just one person has viewed them.
‘It’s……… Rebekah Vardy’s account.’
Wayne and Coleen Rooney’s £20m ‘Morrisons’ manor is ‘flooded
On Tuesday, it was claimed that the Rooney’s basement had flooded due to Storm Lorenzo.
It was said to have caused a ‘massively stressful’ setback in the completion of the sprawling three-storey mansion
Coleen Rooney ‘is so desperate for a baby girl that she’s looked into controversial £8K gender selection treatment’
The Sun first reported that mother of four sons, Coleen had looked into ‘gender selection’ treatment in a desperate bid for a daughter and had flown to Mexico earlier this year to discuss the controversial £8,000 treatment with doctors
Coleen Rooney ‘hopes to revive her TV career including a Strictly stint now she’s moved back to the UK’ after husband Wayne’s scandal
The Sun wrote that she was in talks to revive her once successful UK TV career now her family has moved back to this side of the Atlantic.
The mother-of-four apparently had to decline the offer to appear on this year’s Strictly Come Dancing but could compete in 2020
She also wrote: ‘This has been a burden in my life for a few years now and finally I have got to the bottom of it……’
Rebekah, who is currently on holiday with Jamie in Dubai, hit back minutes later on social media and denied the accusations.
She wrote: ‘Can’t believe I’m even having to write this. I’m pregnant & on holiday & am at a loss to why she would do this.
‘I’m now having to take legal advice as I can’t deal with this stress myself when I’m this pregnant.’
She also shared: ‘As I have just said to you on the phone, I wish you had called me if you thought this.
‘I never speak to anyone about you as various journalists who have asked me to over the years can vouch for.
‘If you thought this was happening you can could have told me & I could have changed my passwords to see if it stopped.’
She continued: ‘Over the years various people have had access to my insta & just this week I found I was following people I didn’t know and have never followed myself.
‘I’m not being funny but I don’t need the money, what would I gain from selling stories on you?
‘I liked you a lot Coleen & I’m so upset that you have chosen to do this especially when I’m heavily pregnant.
‘I’m disgusted that I’m even having to deny this. You should have called me the first time this happened [broken heart emoji].’
Rebekah’s spokesperson also told MailOnline: ‘Please refer to Becky’s social media posts.
‘It isn’t true, she is now very upset and stressed so has passed it to her legal team to deal with. Such a shame that Coleen didn’t just call her when she had her number.’
A host of celebrities took to social media to air their views on the matter and most appeared to be taking Coleen’s side.
Fellow former WAG Danielle Lloyd posted some rat emojis in the comments section of Coleen’s post and even Wayne Rooney prostitute Helen Wood leaped to Coleen’s defence.
She wrote: ‘Probably shouldn’t comment but going to anyway always said Rebekah Vardy was a snake in the grass hence why I’m blocked her whole persona screamed it on the jungle. Sly eyes too.’
She also retweeted a post from Vardy from a fan who wrote: ‘Rebekah Vardy really embarrassing herself with that reply to Coleen Rooney.’
TV star Richard Osman wrote: ‘I will vote for any political party who agree to immediately give us the rest of the day off so we can follow this Coleen Rooney/Rebekah Vardy thing properly.’
It’s no secret that she knows how to maximise her potential as celebrity fodder. She and Jamie tied the knot at Peckforton Castle in Cheshire on May 25, 2016 and sold the rights to their wedding to Hello!
She has appeared regularly on Loose Women and This Morning as well as Good Morning Britain – she has had stints on Jeremy Vine’s show and Celebrity Gogglebox.
In 2017, Rebekah appeared on I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here! but was the third person to be voted off.
Some viewers called for her to leave the show after some of her homophobic tweets were unearthed
The tweets in question said: ‘@MrHarryWood: @Xelahopkins1984 @Little_Miss_Foz what about the 3rd “bird” the gay walker? @jay_walker25 ginger gay w**ker ha ha PMSL.’
While, to the bystander, this tweet mostly doesn’t make sense, the words ‘gay’ and ‘ginger gay w**ker’ caught the eye of her critics, demanding she be taken off the show.
However her friend Jay Walker, who was mentioned in the tweets, stepped in to clear things up.
‘I hate to disappoint people ‘[but] this tweet was to me & we were all just repeating names a guy had called us.
‘Nothing homophobic about it & actually mocking someone who had been. Rebekah is the least homophobic or malicious person I know so afraid your all very much mistaken. Good luck Mrs Vardy.’
She also headed out to Russia with the family to support husband Jamie in the 2018 World Cup.
Rebekah previously had a one-night stand with singer Peter Andre in 2001 and has previously spoken about their relationship in the press, saying he had a ‘chipolata penis.’
She gave an interview to The News Of The World about the fling, saying Peter was ‘the worst lover’ she’d ever had.
Adding: ‘He had great muscles and I thought he’d be a great lover. But he was the worst lover I have ever had. He didn’t even attempt to satisfy me!’
In 2017, Rebekah’s ex-partner and father of one of her children, Luke Foster discussed her relentless quest for fame when he gave an interview with The Mirror, saying at the time: ‘I’m glad I am shot of her.’
He claimed she told him shew had ‘upgraded’ him by dating Jamie, who was then earning £80k per week as a Leicester player.
Luke met Rebekah in 2007 – she already had daughter Megan and the couple had son Taylor, nine, together. He claimed her decision to appear on I’m A Celebrity was motivated by a desire to be more famous, not wealthier.
The ex lower-league footballer said: ‘For Becky, going on the show is not about money. This is all about becoming famous. If someone had a better car than us, she’d want to go one better.
‘She’s now got the husband she always wanted, one who can keep her in the lifestyle she’s dreamt of. She’s got the shopping, the house, the car. She’s living her perfect life.
‘Becky upgraded. She said that to my face. She said he’d treat her a hell of a lot better.’
The couple split in 2013 and three months later Becky and Jamie were expecting their first child together – Becky is now expecting her third child with the footballer.
Meanwhile, it’s been reported that a Manchester poker player called Dave first gave Coleen the idea for her Vardy sting when he tweeted the idea to her back in January.
His idea came after Coleen first expressed a concern that someone close to her was leaking stories from her private social media account after it was reported she was involved in a car crash while on holiday.
She had written: ‘Thank you for the messages asking if I am ok… the car crash story was completely wrong. I wasn’t involved in a crash… the car was damaged by another car.
‘Someone on my private Instagram [has] seen the picture and is telling or selling stories to a certain newspaper. It’s happened several times now over the past couple of years.
She continued: ‘It’s sad to think someone, who I have accepted to follow me is betraying for either money or to keep a relationship with the press.’
Dave then responded: ‘Make a false story tell people different things see which one comes out = find the culprit’ – and although Coleen didn’t reply to him, she did just that.
He told Daily Star on Wednesday: ‘Firstly I hope Coleen is okay. To have a friend betray her like that is something you don’t expect.’
The absolute lad has now changed his Twitter bio to read: ‘Detective who recently solved the Coleen Rooney vs Rebekah Vardy case.’

It was claimed back in 2016 that Wayne had ‘warned’ Jamie Vardy about Rebekah in England showdown talks in 2016.
Wayne and Jamie were both part of the England squad at Euro 2016 as the Three Lions were dumped out by Iceland.
The Times claimed Rooney told Vardy to make sure Rebekah didn’t provide a distraction with her social media posts. She had earlier hit out at French police for treating England fans ‘like animals’.
Ex England boss Roy Hodgson was forced to deny reports that Rooney and Vardy had fallen out during the Euro 2016 tournament.
Hodgson said: ‘I haven’t got a clue what you are referring to. There are absolutely no problems in football terms between Wayne Rooney and Jamie Vardy.
‘In fact quite the reverse, they are very close friends, both on the field and off the field. I have got no idea what you are referring to
‘I certainly would advise Wayne to give no comment to it because it is obviously one salacious story that someone has managed to spin. It is of no interest to us.’
Rebekah Vardy’s unstoppable pursuit of fame: How WAG Queen Bee went through two husbands and then ditched a Conference footballer and her Sheffield nightclub job to ‘upgrade’ to husband Jamie
It may well go down as the spat of the decade; two WAGS at war on social media, with millions tuning in.
Leicester City WAG Rebekah Vardy, 37, who is heavily pregnant with her fifth child, has strongly denied accusations from Coleen Rooney, 33, that she’s is the ‘frenemy’ who’s been leaking stories to the press about her.
However, the online confrontation certainly puts the wife of Jamie Vardy firmly back in the spotlight, a place the outspoken former barmaid clearly feels very comfortable in.
The daughter of a BBC local radio DJ and a window cleaner father, Rebekah has spoken out about her tough upbringing, revealing she once lived on a council estate and was sexually abused as a young teenager. She claims she was asked to leave home at just 16 after a series of rows with her parents.
After two failed marriages and a relationship with League One footballer Luke Foster – the father of her son Taylor- she ‘upgraded’ in the words of a former partner, to Jamie Vardy.
The couple, who have been married since 2016, live with their five – soon-to-be-six – children in the palatial house close to Leicester, where Jamie is a striker for the city’s Premier League club.

Rebekah, ‘Becky’ to close friends, was first married to Mark Godden after a whirlwind romance when he was 21-years-old and she was just 18.
They met at his local pub in Witney where she was a barmaid and he was playing in the darts team.
Speaking to The Mirror in 2017, he claimed they became engaged when Becky Nicholson, as she was then called, spotted a ring in a magazine and told him: ‘I want that. Buy it for me.’
It’s reported the pair spent £7000 on their wedding on the beach in Mexico in 2001, but the union lasted just six months.
Rebekah later admitted that she’d had sex with Peter Andrew while still married to mark, but confessed the Australian singer was the ‘worst lover’ she’s ever had.
Speaking of his ex, after seeing her appear on I’m A Celebrity, Mark told the Sun: ‘I’m an avid fan [of the show] and this year it’s even better because my ex is on it. While I don’t want to see her win, although she’d love to, I want her to go through hell.’
Becky then went on to date Steve Clarke, her boss at a timeshare company, and during their on-off relationship, she fell pregnant by another man.
Aged 23 and eight months pregnant with her daughter Megan, she tied the knot with Steve, which she’s since described as the ‘biggest mistake of her life’.
They soon moved to Cyprus and the marriage broke down after 10 months, when Steve allegedly cheated on her.
Becky fled back to the UK with Meghan and weeks later, Clarke was sentenced to two years in prison after being convicted of causing death by reckless driving in a head-on crash which killed a father and grandfather.
Her next significant relationship was with ex-lower league footballer Luke Foster, father of her son player who she met in 2007 when he was playing for Conference side Oxford United.
After Foster’s career faltered and he ended up playing for more lower league clubs including Lincoln City, he says he felt compelled to put lavish spending on a credit card to keep up with Rebekah’s desire for a luxury lifestyle.
‘Becky was finding it a struggle. We weren’t doing that badly, in my mind – living in a five-bed house, driving around in a Mercedes,’ he told the Mirror.
The couple parted amicably in 2013 and Rebekah, who was working in Viper nightclub in Sheffield, a job Foster got her, soon moved on to her current love match Jamie, who she met while planning his birthday party.
Just three months later, she fell pregnant with their daughter Sofia.
Foster said: ‘She’s now got the husband she always wanted, one who can keep her in the lifestyle she’s dreamt of. She’s got the shopping, the house, the car. She’s living her perfect life.
‘Becky upgraded. She said that to my face. She said he’d treat her a hell of a lot better.’
Becky and Jamie went on to wed at a lavish ceremony at Peckforton Castle in Cheshire in 2106.
But many of her husband’s close family stayed away, with Rebekah blamed for causing a rift between Jamie and his mother Lisa and stepfather Phil, who did not attend their wedding.
Jamie’s daughter Ella, then five, was kept away from the glitzy nuptials by his former girlfriend Emma Daggett. Indeed, Rebekah’s own mother, Alison Nicholson, was also not in attendance.
Rebekah Vardy has frequently given her 389,000 followers on Instagram an insight into the lavish home she shares with her Leicester City striker husband.
The couple, who have been married since 2016, live with their five children in the palatial house close to Leicester, where Jamie is a striker for the city’s Premier League club.
Photos from inside the home include one of her daughter playing with make up in Becky’s massive dressing room and walk-in wardrobe, a hairdressing room, bar, a large gym and an indoor pool.
Other photos reveal her love for all things bling, including several mirrored cabinets and dressers, a large silver sofa, a glass floor and sumptuous furnishings.
Many of her posts feature her adorable children playing with their mountains of toys and dressed impeccably.
When Leicester clinched the title in fairytale fashion that same year, Rebekah’s star was, finally, firmly in the ascendant, with the offer of an appearance on I’m A Celebrity the following year quickly materialising.
The WAG was clearly the pretender to Coleen’s throne too, appearing in faithful fashion wearing an England shirt as Jamie turned out, alongside Wayne Rooney, during the 2018 World Cup.
Blissfully happy with her latest flame, the couple share two children already, Sofia and Finley Jaiden, three, as well as Megan, 13 and Taylor, eight, from her previous relationships.
She’s been refreshingly frank about her cosmetic enhancements too. She told You Magazine shortly after Leicester City were crowned champions that she’d had ‘loads of Botox’.
She added: ‘And I’ve had a boob job, too. I can’t bear it when women lie about this stuff. I go in the sun and I’ve hardly got any wrinkles. It’s not nature, it’s Botox.’
However this spat ends with Coleen, it’s clear that Rebekah plans to come out fighting.
Responding to Coleen’s dramatic allegations, Rebekah’s spokesperson told MailOnline: ‘Please refer to Becky’s social media posts.
‘It isn’t true, she is now very upset and stressed, so has passed it to her legal team to deal with. Such a shame that Coleen didn’t just call her when she had her number.’
With Rebekah making the list of Coleen’s close followers and friends, who else is inside the star’s inner circle of trust?
Coleen is extremely close to her parents, Colette and Tony, and has even called her mother her ‘best friend’ in the past.
The mother-of-four has previously labelled her mum Colette a ‘hero’ and publicly thanked her for helping out with her children with husband Wayne – Kai, nine, Klay, six, Kit, three, and Cass, 20-months.
The star also has a strong bond with her two brothers, Joe and Anthony McLoughlin, with Coleen being best friends with Joe’s partner Amy Wilkinson for years.
Amy and Joe have son, Bobby, who is Coleen’s nephew and is a similar age to her own son, Kit, three.
Coleen and Amy have been pictured at several events together over the years, including an Ed Sheeran concert and even Glastonbury.
As well as her own family, the WAG also has a close bond with Wayne’s nearest and dearest with Coleen close pals with his cousin Claire Rooney.
Coleen also has some close celebrity pals, including fellow WAGs – Abbey Clancy, Danielle Lloyd and Dawn Ward.
The trio make up some of the star’s 366 followers on her private Instagram account, reserved for her inner circle of trust.
Also making the list are Liverpool stylists Linsey Read, who is a luxury stylist and personal shopper for Cricket Fashion – one of Coleen’s favourite stores, and stylist to the stars, Lorraine McCulloch.
Coleen regularly shares updates of her friends to Instagram, and over the weekend, the star shared fun snaps from a girls’ night out to Bongo’s Bingo.
She also enjoyed several fun events with her nearest and dearest over the summer including a boozy luxury yacht trip to Ibiza.
Yet despite having a close connection of pals, Coleen only has one best friend and that is her mother Colette.
Talking to the Express newspaper in 2014, she said: ‘My best friend is my mum. She’s the first person I go to for advice.’
Coleen also added that she is responsible for all of her meet-ups with friends, she said: ‘Not a lot of people know this but I’m very good at organising. I’m quite good at putting on events. Even if it’s just a night out, it’s me who gets everyone together.’
Speaking about her mother in another interview with Cheshire Life in 2014, she said: ‘You get older and realise the sacrifices your elders made for you. Over the years I’ve realised how much I idolise my mum – she is my hero.
‘I just don’t know where I’d be without her. She brought me up in a way I want to emulate with Kai and Klay; and I couldn’t have asked for a better childhood.’
Coleen has stressed how important it is to her that all her children remain grounded despite growing up in the public eye.
